Cognitive Behavioural Therapy / Schema Therapy

Schema Therapy

Schema Therapy was developed by Jeffrey Young, to treat individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder, but can also be used with other presentations caused by difficult childhood experiences. Schemas can be described as our belief systems or 'lifetraps'. The theory on which Schema Therapy is based has four main concepts:

Early Maladaptive Schemas

Schema Domains

Coping Styles

Schema Modes

Early Maladaptive Schemas are our core patterns or behaviours that we tend to repeatedly use throughout our lives.

Schema Domains relate to the emotional needs of a child. If these needs were not met during our childhoods, unhealthy schemas develop, which then result in unhealthy patterns of behaviour.

Coping Styles are the way we adapt to schemas and early life experiences. These are often unhealthy and tend to maintain or worsen the problems.

Modes are emotional states that we all use from time to time. They can sometimes lie dormant for a long time, being activated by certain triggers. Whilst we can be in a dominant state or mode for some time, we can flip over into other modes. The different modes are listed below.

Schema Therapy is based upon CBT, but it is focused much more on early childhood experiences which have caused lifelong difficulties. Assessment includes the use of questionnaires to identify the individual's schemas, coping styles and preferred modes, enabling the client to understand and develop an abilty to change their unhelpful thinking styles and patterns of behaviour.

According to the assumptions of homotoxicology, any human disease is the result of toxins, which originate either from within the body or from its environment. Allegedly, each disease process runs through six specific phases and is the expression of the body’s attempt to cope with these toxins. Diseases are thus viewed as biologically useful defence mechanisms.

Hypnotherapy & Mnemodynamic Therapy

Eamonn McVeigh

Hypnotherapy is a type of complementary and alternative medicine in which the mind is used to help with a variety of problems, such as breaking bad habits or coping with stress.

Mnemodynamic therapy is a set of existing techniques further refined to help the client remove and come to terms with their life issues both past and present. It integrates the best of CBT and NLP with Freudian analysis adding the benefit of the speed of hypnotherapy. A state of great improvement with equilibrium is usually reached in 6 sessions.

The model was designed to help people deal with simple or complex and traumatic past events in what we consider to be the most fluent collection of methods, or model, yet put together. Examples Written in the text refer to children very often. You will need to “chunk up” to make relevant for yourself.

Physiological Regulating Medicines.

The term “nutraceutical” has been used since the early 1990s to define

the branch of medicine that involves and studies the beneficial and therapeutic

action of foods on human health.

From an etymological standpoint, ‘nutraceutical’ is a portemanteau of

‘nutrition’ and ‘pharmaceutical’, which summarises the profound meaning

of this modern field of medicine: food can be the first efficacious

therapeutic solution.

Let food be thy medicine

and medicine be thy food

Some 2,500 years have passed since this enlightened statement was made

by Hippocrates of Cos.

And yet it would seem that no claim has ever been truer.

The aphorism by the father of medicine is supported by the progress

made in the field of molecular biology over the past fifty years that have

made it possible to understand the profound mechanisms by which the

active ingredients contained in foods affect our wellbeing and health.

These active ingredients in foods can constitute a tool of primary prevention

for a great many diseases and an efficacious complementary therapy

in the treatment of a broad spectrum of diseases.

Nutraceuticals has allowed us to understand the relationships between

biology, chemistry and medicine and to recognise the aetiopathogenetic

relationships between lifestyle, dietary habits, health and disease.

Over the last decade, the progress achieved by physiological regulating

medicine, and in particular the definition of the mechanisms of

the action of low doses of cytokines, hormones, growth factors and neuropeptides,

have urged researchers to direct their interest and research

towards studying and understanding the relationship that exists between

nutrients and messenger molecules in guiding physiology.

The encounter between physiology, molecular biology and nutraceuticals

led to the foundation of Physiological Nutraceuticals, the m

EFT - Emotional Freedom Techniques is a relatively new discovery and a fast-evolving treatment within the field of Energy Psychology which is catching the attention of healers, scientists, spiritualists and lay people.

Often referred to as "Psychological acupressure", the technique works by releasing blockages within the energy system which are the source of emotional intensity and discomfort. These blockages in our energy system, in addition to challenging us emotionally, often lead to limiting beliefs and behaviours and an inability to live life harmoniously. Resulting symptoms are either emotional and/ or physical and include lack of confidence and self esteem, feeling stuck anxious or depressed, or the emergence of compulsive and addictive behaviours. It is also now finally widely accepted that emotional disharmony is a key factor in physical symptoms and dis-ease and for this reason these techniques are being extensively used on physical issues, including chronic illness with often astounding results. As such these techniques are being accepted more and more in medical and psychiatric circles as well as in the range of psychotherapies and healing disciplines.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy treatment that was originally designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories

NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming. Neuro refers to your neurology; Linguistic refers to language; programming refers to how that neural language functions. In other words, learning NLP is like learning the language of your own mind!

What is Supervision?

Supervision is the process by which a trained senior professional helps another person to learn and develop professionally through engaging in a process of review of and reflection on their work. A useful definition is as follows: ‘The formal supervision, by approved supervisors of a relationship-based education and training that is work-focused and which manages, supports and evaluates the work of colleagues’
